After half of the suppression team (comprised of Akai squad) is destroyed by GA-487, Captain Kobayashi orders the retreat. Momose ignores the command and rushes towards the Gauna. Midorikawa intercepts an attack meant for her. Before he succumbs to his injuries, he urges her to escape, but Momose is killed as well. With no obstacles remaining, GA-487 is threatening to make contact with the Sidonia. Kobayashi is advised to deploy a defense team with kabizashi, but she opts to evade the Gauna by aggressively accelerating the Sidonia. All throughout the ship, an emergency warning is blared that urges everyone to immediately strap themselves to a safety handrail. Nagate and Izana run cross Hoshijiro and the trio connect themselves to the nearest railing. Soon after, the Sidonia's right engine begins to ignite. Hoshijiro calls out to a passerby to connect his safety belt, but it's too late. The first engine ignites, accelerating the ship at 5Gs, throwing everyone sideways. The passerby is flung down the corridor. All across the ship, anything and anyone not securely fastened violently flies through the air. Hundreds of rag-dolling bodies splat into walls, their bodies exploding upon contact. The left engine ignites, further increasing the destruction of architecture and human alike. The maneuver is a success insofar as the Sidonia and the Gauna are no longer on a collision course. Captain Kobayashi orders the ignitions to be cut and for eight kabizashi to be equipped for the defense team. With gravity reinstated, survivors begin to collect the dead and tend to the wounded.
Every pilot is summoned, with Nagate and Hoshijiro being assigned to be members of the defense team alongside Kunato Norio and Honoka En. They are informed that their mission is to retrieve one of the kabizashi Akai squad were in possession of. The team is warned that the timing on their positioning is going to be tricky, with mistakes having potentially serious consequences. The team deploys with hundreds of Guardians in formation on standby. The retrieval squad successfully secures the adrift kabizashi but GA-487 redirects itself and barrels toward the team. They initiate a four-knight clasp formation in order to outrun the Gauna, but the Gauna morphs its placenta. Commander Ichirou commands the squad to scatter moments before the Gauna attacks: firing a Higgs particle cannon of its own. The attack is a direct hit and Kunato's and Honoka's units are severely damaged while Hoshijiro's unit's engine malfunctions and accelerates her into open space. Hoshijiro is ordered to eject before the engine explodes, which she's able to do mere moments before her unit explodes. With the Gauna still quickly approaching the team, Nagate, being the last pilot with an operational unit, is instructed to retrieve Kunato's and Honoka's units and tow them back to the Sidonia. Nagate analyzes the approaching Gauna and observes upon the body what he assumes to be something akin to their unit's Higgs delivery tank. He takes Kunato's kabizashi, much to the disdain of Kunato, and awaits the arrival of GA-487. The command bridge and the pilot trainees on standby watch on anxiously, unsure of Nagate's plan. The Gauna fires its cannon and the beam disintegrates everything below the left elbow of Nagate's unit. Undeterred, Nagate returns fire, aiming at the mass he observed just earlier. The attack is a success and the Gauna's true body is exposed. In seconds, GA-487 reaches Nagate, who spears the Gauna's true body with Kunato's kabizashi. The Gauna explodes and its placenta disintegrates. Izana and the other pilot trainees cheer. Commander Ichirou requests that Nagate retrieve Kunato and Honoka but Nagate indignantly exclaims that he's going to go look for Hoshijiro then blasts away.
