Nagate, fully aware of the legal repercussions for doing so (as well as the damage his ship has sustained), passes beyond the Sidonia's return limit in his pursuit of Hoshijiro. In doing so, he also passes the ship's range of radio contact. He finds Hoshijiro's ejection pod, to Hoshijiro's dismay. She tells him she intentionally remained silent in the hopes that he would assume her to be dead and wouldn't venture out on a suicide rescue mission.
Nagate brings her aboard his unit, wherein the two remain for days on end, slowly running out the unit's store of packaged food and water. By day eleven, Nagate is barely conscious and dying of dehydration. In an attempt to keep him alive, Hoshijiro filters her urine and shamefully feeds him the safe liquid. Suddenly energized, Nagate regains his focus and suggests they filter the unit's lubricant for drinkable water. The idea is a success, and in their excitement, the two hug. At that moment, they notice a glowing ring in the distance growing larger, which turns out to be hundreds of knights in clasp formation: the entire defense team came to rescue them.
